U.S. Marshall slain in a shootout, allegedly killed by Alexandria man officers were attempting to apprehend while serving warrant

ALEXANDRIA, LA (MasseyProductions.net)—Deputy U.S. Marshal Drew Hanson, 36, died in the line of duty Monday, July 13, 2026, in Alexandria, Louisiana, while a task force was attempting to apprehend fugitive 48-year-old Clarence A. Frazier Jr.  The suspect is a registered sex offender with pending state charges, and Deputy Hanson was reportedly shot by Frazier after he barricaded himself in a bedroom.  The shots were said to have come after officers had entered the home to serve a warrant.

Frazier was taken into custody following a three-hour standoff and was hospitalized with injuries sustained during the incident. 

According to NBC News, Hanson and the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office arrived at Frazier's home with an arrest warrant for contempt of court and an additional search warrant after he failed to appear in state court for trial.  

According to the Department of Justice, Frazier is charged with murder of a federal officer, and if convicted, faces a maximum sentence of life in prison or the death penalty.

The Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office has extended an invitation to the public to join with the law enforcement community in paying respects. Cenla residents are invited to line the procession route from the Pentecostals of Alexandria, down to MacArthur Drive and ending up at Hixson Funeral Home on Jackson Street.  The procession will take place Saturday, July 18, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

In a release from the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Public Affairs, Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche said, “U.S. Marshals risk their lives every day - securing our courts, protecting our communities, and working shoulder-to-shoulder with local law enforcement to bring dangerous fugitives to justice. Deputy U.S. Marshal Drew Hanson embodied that courage and dedication… Tragically, the defendant's alleged actions claimed the life of a dedicated law enforcement officer who was simply doing his duty.  

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Marshal Hanson's family and the entire law enforcement community mourning his loss,” Blanche said.  “Drew paid the ultimate price while protecting our communities. His sacrifice will never be forgotten, and his service will forever stand as an inspiration to all who wear the badge.” 

U.S. Marshals Service Director Gadyaces Serralta said, “Our men and women put their lives on the line every day to apprehend the country’s most dangerous criminals… When a Deputy U.S. Marshal is killed in the line of duty serving an arrest warrant on a violent fugitive, this agency and indeed the entire country mourn that loss.  While we are all profoundly heartbroken by Drew Hanson’s tragic death, we are at the same time grateful for his unselfish devotion to protecting his community and those he loved.” 

Western District of Louisiana U.S. Attorney Zachary A. Keller said, “Our Office joins all of our Western District community and the Department of Justice in mourning and honoring the loss of this Deputy Marshal—a man who was a father, a husband, a son, and a child of God—as someone who paid the ultimate price in service of our community’s safety.”

Keller went on to say in the release, “This investigation is ongoing and a criminal complaint is only an allegation, but our office looks forward to working alongside our federal and state law enforcement partners to ensure that justice is done and that accountability reflects the enormity of the loss our community grieves today.” 

The FBI is heading up the investigation with assistance from RPSO and Director Kash Patel also weighed in saying, “The FBI offers our deepest condolences to the family of Deputy U.S. Marshal Hanson, who was killed in the line of duty while doing his job pursuing a subject wanted for violent crime… We will commit our full force of resources to conduct a thorough investigation with our partners at the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office and the Department of Justice to ensure the individual responsible for this horrific act is brought to justice. The FBI sends our prayers to Deputy Hanson’s family, friends, and our partners at the U.S. Marshal’s service.”
